4th edition of the Montreal Guitar Show runs from July 2 to 4

A wall-to-wall guitar weekend!

Montreal, Monday, June 7, 2010 - Guitar aficionados of every sort will be thronging to the much-awaited weekend dedicated exclusively to the guitar: the Montreal Guitar Show. Already in its 4th year, this high-level guitarophile gathering will take place at the Hyatt Regency Montréal from July 2 to 4, 2010, right in the middle of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. And its program reads like a Django Reinhardt score: exceptional and extravagant! Mini-concerts presented by Premier Guitar, concerts in the Guitarissimo The Gazette series, free concerts in the Guitare Guitare series presented by Hyatt Regency Montréal, workshops, lectures and an exhibition venue dedicated partly to the great master luthiers and partly to the sacred beast of rock and blues itself, the electric guitar. Three unforgettable, back-to-back action-packed days for amateurs and connoisseurs alike!

The biggest show dedicated exclusively to the guitar

Again this year, the MGS, the biggest guitar event of its kind in Canada, will be featuring a program and exhibition venue worthy of its reputation, with around 100 concerts spotlighting the six-string marvel, and more than 150 luthiers, musicians and specialists from around the world. And with this 4th edition, the MGS again clinches its reputation as the can’t-miss gathering for all guitar fans-both electric and acoustic!

Over 65 mini-concerts presented by Premier Guitar

That guitar hanging from the ceiling looks like a real gem, but how does it sound? This is exactly what you will find out in the 65+ free mini-concerts for visitors, presented by some of the world’s most-lauded luthiers, who will be on site at the Show. Charles Hunter and Sylvain Provost, Antoine Dufour, Jean-Luc Thievent, Ewan Dobson and many more will each do 15-minute guitar stints in concerts combining the expertise of famous guitarists with the stunning creations of a handful of the leading luthiers around, such as Ervin Somogyi, Charles Fox, Greenfield Guitars, Jeff Traugott, Ken Parker, Linda Manzer, Chatelier Frères and Michihiro Matsuda.

Free concerts every evening starting at 6 p.m.

Every evening, the concerts in the Guitare Guitare series presented by the Hyatt Regency Montréal will spotlight the “guitarists of all guitarists,” who are sure to blow away even the most studied connoisseurs. A total of 12 free concerts, peerless performances in warm, intimate settings, will be staged at the Salon Jeanne-Mance in the Hyatt Regency Montréal. Memorable moments await you with Jean‑Philippe Guy, Jean-Luc Thievent, Zeb Heintz, Tony McManus, Miodrag Zerdoner, Gareth Pearson, Roger Hudson, Marc Atkinson Trio, Ivan Garzon, Tony Cox, Ryan Leblanc and the Red Guitar Show with Bruce Forman.

Eight concerts in the Guitarissimo The Gazette series

Under the Guitarissimo banner, phenomenal guitar virtuosos David Reinhardt, Matt Andersen, Sylvain Luc, Yamandu Costa, Andy McKee, Charlie Hunter, Bob Brozman and Monte Montgomery will each be serving up an unprecedented concert in the Cinquième Salle at Place des Arts. And to wind up the event in great style, Craig D’Andrea, Ewan Dobson, Antoine Dufour, Gareth Pearson and Don Ross will take turns captivating audiences on stage-THE concert for all guitar fans- at the Soirée CandyRat Records evening, to be held in the Théâtre Jean‑Duceppe at PdA.

Workshops and lectures

And the MGS means more than concerts. It also offers a unique opportunity to receive advice from the crème of the pros! For example, big names like Matt Andersen and other guitarists in the Guitarissimo series, as well as three surprise guests from CandyRat Records, will be hosting some of the 9 workshops, featuring their passion for their instrument, the highlights of their careers, and their own special tips and techniques.

This 100% guitar-filled weekend would not be what it is without its lectures on the instrument, the industry and its many ins and outs. It offers a wealth of invaluable information on guitar making, its marketing and its future. The 11 lectures will be given by renowned luthiers and guitar experts Charles Fox, Ken Parker, Jeff Traugott with special guest Charlie Hunter, Juha Ruokangas, Michael Greenfield accompanied by the mindboggling guitarist Andy McKee, Tom Ribbecke with guest Michael Guernian. And lastly, the collectors’ market will be demystified by expert George Gruhn.

THE mecca for luthiers…

To sum up, the MGS is first and foremost the venue where the greatest master luthiers convene, together with the curious, buyers, collectors, specialists and musicians from all arenas. Gathered together under one roof will be over 100 luthiers from the four corners of the globe (notably Quebec, the rest of Canada, the United States, France, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, England, Finland and Australia) to exhibit and sell their finest handcrafted masterpieces. Acoustic, resophonic, archtop, chambered, bass, manouche (gypsy), classical, bouzouki, mandolin, baritone, ukulele, flamenco, Weissenborn, Maccafferi, banjo, Romantic guitar, oud, lute, saz, harp guitar, Hawaiian…you name it! An exhibition hall decked out with nothing but the best: it’s pure guitar heaven!

…and amplified guitars to boot

Given the blowout success of the electric guitar component at last year’s MGS, the concept will be back again this year. An entire exhibition hall will be set aside for this instrument alone, where luthiers and manufacturers of specialized accessories (amps, effects, pedals, etc.) will be showcasing their wares and holding special activities in its honour.
