Katie Melua

new album, new show!

Tickets already on sale

Montreal, Wednesday, June 16, 2010 - The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is thrilled to announce the next Montreal appearance by European sensation of the moment Katie Melua, part of the 2010-2011 season of the Jazz All-Year Round series presented by TD. The star has just reaffirmed her status as a “super-singer” with a new album, The House, lodged at #1 on the European Billboard Top 100 upon its release, and finally available in Canada since yesterday. The concert will take place in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts, on September 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets are already on sale.

In 2007, after the release of her Pictures album, Katie Melua was the biggest-selling female British singer in the world. Her career, launched with the single The Closest Thing to Crazy (2003) when she was barely 19, seems like a fairytale coupled with a rollercoaster ride: a dizzying ascent punctuated by hit records, awards and massive concerts. Among these-and most uncommon!-achievements are a Dutch tulip named in her honour, a personal compliment from Queen Elizabeth II (”I have heard your album on the radio; it is very nice”) and even a Guinness World Record (for her concert on an oil rig, 303 metres below sea level!).

Her first major North American show was the opening concert of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 2008. And now, she’s back with The House, another solid and touching album of moving songs that never fail to raise gooseflesh. The recording marks a musical sea change for the Georgian-born singer, collaborating this time out with producer William Orbit (Madonna, U2, Blur…), who enriched Katie’s style with elements of electronic music. And if the success of first single The Flood is any indicator of what’s to come, her conquest of the New World is well underway!

A non-profit organization, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is pursuing its mission of disseminating and developing jazz and its musical cousins for the eleventh year in a row, by reinvesting its surpluses in the presentation of special concerts at its Jazz All-Year Round series. With support from public partners, specifically, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and Canadian Heritage, it can thus offer Montrealers and visitors to the city the chance to experience the rhythms of jazz all-year round! The Festival also highlights the support of the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, official host of the Jazz All Year Round series, as well as the support of Bell and the Hyatt Regency Montréal, partner and official hotel of the series, respectively.
