The 5th edition of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix:

competition and pleasure are back again!

Montreal, Monday, August 9, 2010 - The call is out for guitarists of all styles-blues, rock, jazz or acoustic-and all ages: they are invited to come show the world that they are the best guitarists in town. Yes, for the 5th year in a row, the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix presented by Godin Guitars in collaboration with Steve’s Music Store and Planète Jazz, will once again serve as the ideal platform for showcasing our greatest talents! On September 25 and 26, the Savoy du Métropolis and L’Astral of the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan will be welcoming talented amateur guitarists, divided into four categories and poised to let loose as they vie for the title… and thousands of dollars in prizes! To enter, candidates are asked to register at montrealguitargrandprix.com before 5 p.m. on September 23. The public will of course be invited to attend in large numbers to applaud them on.

Categories in the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix and times for the different audition categories:

  • classical - Saturday, September 25, 9:30a.m.
  • blues/rock - Saturday, September 25, 1p.m.
  • jazz (archtop or gypsy) - Sunday, September 26, 9:30a.m.

The Montreal Guitar Grand Prix is an initiative designed to encourage the new generation by offering them a unique stage experience and a chance to take home thousands of dollars in prizes, courtesy of Godin Guitars and Steve’s Music Store, the official suppliers-Marshall amplifiers, DigiTech guitar effects and Samson audio components-as well as the Montreal Guitar Show and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.

The public is invited to attend and support the participants at the preliminary auditions, to be held on two days, Saturday, September 25, and Sunday, September 26, at the Savoy du Métropolis. The participants will be required to perform a piece of their choice (a composition or interpretation) before a judges’ panel. The guitarists chosen will move on to the next round, the final auditions, on Sunday, September 27, starting at 8 p.m. at L’Astral, where the three top candidates in each category will play like never before to win the title!

The GPGM, presented as part of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, is proud to participate in the 14th anniversary of Quebec’s Journées de la culture and to offer our talented young musicians a platform for developing and showcasing their art.

To enter, candidates must register at montrealguitargrandprix.com, before September 23 at 5 p.m. It’s important to act fast because places are limited, and it’s first come, first served! Registration costs: $25, including fees and taxes.
