The 5th edition of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix:
guitar fans… on stage and in the audience!
Free closing concert: Jonas Duo Acoustic Featuring Corey Diabo
Montreal, Tuesday, September 7, 2010 - Registration is in full swing for the 5th edition of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix, presented by Godin Guitars in collaboration with Steve’s Music Store. Our future guitar stars have until September 23, 5 p.m., to register on the event website, at montrealguitargrandprix.com ($25, taxes and fees included), in one or two categories of their choice: classical, acoustic (fingerstyle, fingerpicking and flatpicking), jazz (archtop or gypsy) and blues/rock. Preliminary auditions will take place on Saturday, September 25, and Sunday, September 26, at the Savoy du Métropolis, then the grande finale at L’Astral in the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto on Sunday, September 26, starting at 8 p.m. Not only can the general public attend these auditions free of charge and offer their support to the upcoming generation, but they will also be able to pick the winner of the People’s Choice Award of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal by identifying the guitarist who impressed them most.
To wind up this guitar-filled evening, on September 26, fans will also have the chance to attend-again free of charge and again at L’Astral-a performance by Jonas Duo Acoustic Featuring Corey Diabo, just three days before the concert they’ll be staging with the entire band prior to the September 29 release of their newest CD at Club Soda!
A judges’ panel, made up of professionals and presided over by Jean-François Hamel, will have the pleasure and difficult challenge of choosing the best performances. Isabelle Héroux (in the classical category), Paul Deslauriers (blues/rock), Tim Brady (jazz) and Jason Lang (acoustic) will judge the preliminary auditions, while Jérôme Ducharme (classical), Guillaume Doiron (blues/rock), Richard Ring (jazz) and Pierre Côté (acoustic) will take over for the final auditions.
The Montreal Guitar Grand Prix is an initiative designed to encourage the new generation by offering them a unique stage experience and a chance to take home thousands of dollars in prizes, courtesy of Godin Guitars and Steve’s Music Store, the official suppliers-Marshall amplifiers, DigiTech guitar effects and Samson audio components-as well as the Montreal Guitar Show and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.
The GPGM, presented as part of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, is proud to participate in the 14th anniversary of Quebec’s Journées de la culture and to offer our talented young musicians a platform for developing and showcasing their art.
