12 star players at the 5th edition of the
Montreal Guitar Grand Prix
Montreal, Monday, September 27, 2010 - Last night saw the grand finale of the 5th edition of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix, presented by Godin Guitars in collaboration with Steve’s Music Store. After two days of preliminary auditions at the Savoy du Métropolis, we were able to watch the 12 finalists as they opened the gala closing event at L’Astral and went all out in the battle for first prize in their respective categories. Already spoiled by this stellar performance by the crème of the up-and-coming guitar generation, the public was then treated to a spectacular concert by the acoustic duo Jonas and Corey Diabo. In short, guitar fans of all stripes were thrilled to the hilt!
The judges’ panel, made up of professionals and presided by Jean-François Hamel, faced the difficult task of choosing from among no fewer than 80 performances: Isabelle Héroux (in the classical category), Paul Deslauriers (blues/rock), Tim Brady (jazz) and Jason Lang (acoustic) judged the preliminary auditions, while Jérôme Ducharme, Guillaume Doiron, Richard Ring, Pierre Côté and Daniel Lemay took over for the final auditions. The public also got to pick its favourite by choosing which of the finalists would walk away with the People’s Choice Award of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, presented by La Presse journalist Daniel Lemay. This year, the award went to the talented guitarist Arturo Parra.
