Carmen Souza and Salif Keita join the musical world tour of Jazz All-Year Round

Montreal, Monday, November 22, 2010 - Organizers of the Jazz All-Year Round series, part of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and presented by TD, are thrilled to welcome two renowned artists and add them to the already impressively diverse 2011 roster: major African star Salif Keita and, in her first-ever Montreal performance, the refreshing Carmen Souza. Tickets for these new concerts are now on sale.

Carmen Souza - January 15, 8 p.m., L’Astral - Born in Lisbon and now living in London, Cape Verdean singer Carmen Souza finally lands in Montreal! Yes-finally, because all who have heard her, from near and far-including her lovely latest, Protegid-have been dreaming of catching her live onstage! And why not-she’s a delightful discovery, especially in the middle of a Montreal winter! Start with her music, which is close to jazz but borrows a little bit from everywhere, from both genre and geography; move on to her voice, singing in Créole and Portuguese, with a sensuality and earthiness that beguile, and end with her presence: that beautiful face, those smiling eyes, a literal sunbeam of a woman onstage.

Salif Keita - April 15, 8 p.m., Métropolis - It’s no exaggeration to call him a Malian legend. For the past 40 years, Salif Keita has enriched the musical legacy of his country, all the while welcoming in a refreshing array of influences. The result: a remarkable oeuvre open to the music of the world, favouring Asian traditions as much as mandinka. An international star with a particularly devoted Montreal fanbase-he was presented with the 2006 Carlos-Jobim Award by the Festival for his marked influence on world music-he’ll return to us with the first bloom of spring to deliver the superb songs from La Différence, a hit at the recent Francos.

Exciting additional shows!

Great news! By popular demand, we’ve added two performances to the program. Get ready for sets in L’Astral starring two of our biggest Québécois stars, Guy Bélanger, April 2, 8 p.m., and Bob Walsh, April 23, 8 p.m.

The Festival de Jazz on tour

We remind you that the Festival is going on tour across Quebec for a 2nd year. This time out, excellent guitarist Jordan Officer and charming singer Stacey Kent take on the province: in Montreal on March 11 & 12, 2011, in L’Astral, as well as March 10 in Longueuil, March 13 in Gatineau, March 15 in Brossard, March 17 in Saint‑Hyacinthe, March 18 in Sainte-Thérèse, March 19 in Shawinigan, March 20 in Sherbrooke, March 24 in Valleyfield, March 25 in L’Assomption, March 26 in Beloeil and March 27 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

A non-profit organization, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is pursuing its mission of disseminating and developing jazz and its musical cousins for the eleventh year in a row, by reinvesting its surpluses in the presentation of special concerts at its Jazz All-Year Round series. With support from public partners, specifically, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and Canadian Heritage, it can thus offer Montrealers and visitors to the city the chance to experience the rhythms of jazz all-year round! The Festival also highlights the support of the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, official host of the Jazz All Year Round series, as well as the support of Bell and the Hyatt Regency Montréal, partner and official hotel of the series, respectively.
