Robert Plant

Recipient of the

Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award

Montreal, Tuesday, June 21, 2011 - The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is proud to announce the awarding of the Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award to legendary British singer, musician and songwriter Robert Plant. The prize will be presented to him by André Ménard, artistic director and co-founder of the Festival, at his concert Friday at 7 p.m. at the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Place des Arts as part of the Événements spéciaux TD series.

Robert Plant will be the sixth artist to receive the Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award. Created especially on the occasion of the 27th edition of the Festival, in 2006, this special award underlines a popular artist’s extraordinary contribution to the musical world.

Music legend Robert Plant’s legacy reaches over and through every musical direction and spans over 40 years. At 17, with his first group Band of Joy, he was already recasting beloved songs in his own image, which is to say, with his own voice: that unique instrument, at once delicate and moving, fascinating and utterly inimitable. And consider a truly unique group, Led Zeppelin, with which he vaulted to the status of legend. From 1968 to 1980, they exploded the boundaries of hard rock, electrifying it with blues and folk influences, but also weaving in threads of Celtic, Indian, Arab and North African music. Since the group’s separation, Plant has pursued his musical exploration through numerous projects, as a solo artist, in such groups as The Honeydrippers and the Strange Sensation, and pairing up with his old confederate Jimmy Page and country singer Alison Krauss-with whom he won 6 Grammys in 2009 for the album Raising Sand, including Album and Song of the Year. Recipient of the prestigious Polar Music Prize, member of the Music Hall of Fame in the UK, named a Commander of the British Empire and on tour with his Band of Joy show, a nod back to his first musical loves, he ceaselessly contributes to the progress of music, colliding styles like a musical particle accelerator. And always, there is that voice… Robert Plant & The Band of Joy, June 24, 7 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA (Les Événements spéciaux TD series).

As winner of the Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award, Robert Plant follows in the footsteps of Smokey Robinson (2010), Stevie Wonder (2009), Leonard Cohen (2008), Bob Dylan (2007) and Paul Simon (2006).
