Opening of the 5th Montreal Guitar Show
More than 500 guitars await visitors, starting tomorrow!
Montreal, Thursday, June 30, 2011 - The 5th edition of the Montreal Guitar Show (MGS) presented as part of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal will kick off this Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Montréal! Until July 3, guitar fiends can enjoy an array of concerts, participate in workshops and conferences, meet and discuss with 145 luthiers and specialists from 13 countries and-who knows-perhaps even find a six-string soulmate among the 500 guitars on display and available for purchase!
Packed with concerts…
The MGS will present over 80 concerts, assembling a Who’s Who of amateurs, musicians, luthiers and specialists. Skilled guitarists will showcase their expertise in sixty miniconcerts, thrilling MGS visitors with the sound and vast potential of guitar masterpieces prepared by the world’s great luthiers. The Guitare Guitare series presented by Hyatt Regency Montréal assembles renowned guitarists for unforgettable-and free!-concerts in the Salon Jeanne‑Mance of the Hyatt Regency Montréal. Lastly, the Guitarissimo The Gazette series presents three straight evenings with three concerts each in the Cinquième Salle, Place des Arts, a fabulous program sparkling with great guitar virtuosi: Erik Mongrain, MG3 Montréal Guitare Trio, Kaki King, Laurence Juber, Freddy Koella, California Guitar Trio, Erik Bibb, Jake Shimabukuro and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
… workshops, conferences…
This Montreal guitar Mecca is also an opportunity for fans of the instrument and the professional elite to meet and discuss everything “guitar.” The guitarists of the Guitarissimo The Gazette series will present a total of nine workshops. Plus, there’ll be fascinating conferences headed by major luthiers and authorities on the subject, touching on such varied subjects as the evolution of the guitar, design and creation, and the characteristics of different models. There’s something for every taste!
… and surprises!
Given the blowout success of the electric guitar component at past MGS, the concept will be back again this year. An entire exhibition hall will be set aside for this instrument alone, where luthiers and manufacturers of specialized accessories will be showcasing their wares and holding special activities in its honour. Also, we remind you that living legend Paco de Lucía is the recipient of the 3rd annual Montreal Guitar Show Tribute Award, created to recognize the incredible contributions made by the greatest international guitarists to the instrument and to music itself. Following Jeff Beck, who inaugurated this guitar “Hall of Fame” in 2009, and George Benson, last year’s recipient, it was only natural to choose one of the greatest virtuosi of flamenco guitar.
The Montreal Guitar Show, presented in conjunction with the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, would like to acknowledge the support of its partners: the SODEC (the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles), the magazines Acoustic Guitar, Guitarist Acoustic, Guitar Aficionado and Premier Guitar as well as laguitare.com and Sonopan.
We’ll see you at the 5th edition of the Montreal Guitar Show, from July 1 to 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Montréal. Tickets cost $15, plus taxes, and are available at the MGS, at the Hyatt Regency Montréal’s Grand Salon and Salon Alfred-Rouleau.
