A grand evening of guitar
Sunday, October 2 at 8 p.m. in L’Astral
Montreal, Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - Attention, guitarists of all genres, the registration deadline for the 6th edition of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix presented by Guitares Godin in collaboration with Steve’s Music Store and Planète Jazz is nearly upon us: six-string slingers have until Wednesday, September 28 at 5 p.m. to file their applications for a chance to not only win thousands of dollars in prizes, but also be a part of the grand finale to be held on Sunday, October 2 at 8 p.m. in L’Astral. During this finale, presented to the public free of charge, fans will have the opportunity to watch performances by our 12 contest finalists-the 3 best in each category-as well as a concert by major guitarist Benjamin Woods, renowned as the inventor of “flametal”, a unique style blending flamenco and… metal!
Only eight days left to register!
Those who want to come out and show the world their guitar talents have just eight days left to register for the preliminary auditions, specifically, until September 28, 5 p.m., on the event website at montrealguitargrandprix.com ($25, taxes and fees included), in one or two categories of their choice: classical, acoustic (fingerstyle, fingerpicking and flatpicking), jazz (archtop or gypsy) and blues/rock. Preliminary auditions will take place on Saturday, October 1, and Sunday, October 2, at the Savoy du Métropolis, then the grand finale at L’Astral in the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto on Sunday, October 2, starting at 8 p.m. Not only can the general public attend these auditions free of charge and offer their support to the upcoming generation, but they will also be able to pick the winner of the People’s Choice Award of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal by identifying the guitarist who impressed them most.
A judges’ panel, made up of professionals and presided over by Jean-François Hamel, will have the pleasure and difficult challenge of choosing the best performances. Denis Poliquin (in the classical category), Guillaume Doiron (blues/rock), Sylvain Provost (jazz) and Jason Lang (acoustic) will judge the preliminary auditions, while Jérôme Ducharme, David Laflèche, Michael Alexander Gauthier and Erik Mongrain will take over for the final auditions.
The Montreal Guitar Grand Prix is an initiative designed to encourage the new generation by offering them a unique stage experience and a chance to take home thousands of dollars in prizes, courtesy of Godin Guitars and Steve’s Music Store, the official suppliers-Marshall amplifiers, DigiTech guitar effects and Samson audio components-as well as the Montreal Guitar Show and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.
The GPGM, presented as part of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, is proud to participate in the 15th anniversary of Quebec’s Journées de la culture and to offer our talented young musicians a platform for developing and showcasing their art.
