Grand opening in the Quartier des spectacles
Welcome to the
Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan!
Montreal, Thursday, April 30, 2009 - The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, in collaboration with Rio Tinto Alcan, is proud today to announce the official name of the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, which will open its doors this coming June 29 to kick off the Festival’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Perfectly situated on the corner of Ste. Catherine Street and the new Place des Festivals, the Blumenthal Building, listed as a heritage site, was generously ceded to the Festival by the Government of Québec, which contributed a major subsidy for its transformation and to conform it to standards; as well as the Government of Canada, for its development, outfitting and specialized equipment. This new large-scale project finally establishes a year-round home for the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, one of our city’s major symbols on the international stage, and is certain to become a very popular cultural and tourist attraction, offering a permanent new showcase for our artists.
“As a partner of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal from 1987 to 1991 and co-presenter of the event since 2006, we are proud to support this new, permanent foundation for Montreal’s festival community,” said Jacynthe Côté, Chief executive, Rio Tinto Alcan. “This site will showcase our city’s rich musical heritage and contribute to its vibrant arts community year-round.”
Alain Simard, president-founder of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, was overjoyed by the support: “The Maison du Festival is a grand dream we’ve cherished for a decade now. Today, I not only have the happiness of seeing this dream realized, but also the pleasure of seeing it bear the name of the Festival’s most faithful partner, Rio Tinto Alcan!”
The Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan
The Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan is styled as a permanent headquarters for the diffusion and promotion of jazz and musicianship at the international level. It offers a versatile new live showroom, a bistro-terrasse, the Galerie du Festival-which can be converted into a pressroom during the Festival-exhibition and screening rooms, and a centre for the audiovisual documentation, conservation and protection of the Festival’s musical heritage, open free of charge to the public.
It will also be a cornerstone of the Quartier des spectacles, a sector entirely reconceived to emphasize and showcase the culture and venues of the downtown core. To that end, some facilities in the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan may also be used by other events and festivals, since they will have access to its dressing rooms and the logistical facilities and offices on the upper floors. Outside of the festival period, these premises may serve as rehearsal spaces for our musicians.
This new cultural complex will quickly become one of the city’s most high-profile tourist attractions, drawing visitors all year around by capitalizing on the international renown of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal!
