celebrate 20 years of Francos fun!

Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m.

Montreal, Monday, April 21, 2008 - Twenty years of musical celebration-that calls for a party! At this 20th edition of the FrancoFolies de Montréal, presented from Thursday, July 24 to Sunday, August 3, 2008 by Ford Canada in collaboration with Molson Dry, we’re rolling out the red carpet for the brightest lights in francophone music, as well as those artists from here and abroad who’ve left their mark on our two-decade fiesta of francophone and world music-whether they “grew up” on our stages, or arrived in full glory to confirm their greatness with brilliant and galvanizing performances.

As befits the occasion, this anniversary edition turns its spotlight on French chanson, hip hop and rock, on a diversity of sound and style, and above all, the invigorating vivacity of francophone music! On the program: over 50 indoor concerts, a wild array of free outdoor shows (which will be announced July 9) and 20 years’ worth of reawakened history. And don’t forget to stop by the Pavillon magique, a brand-new stage under the tent in the Parc des festivals! Tickets for all concerts in this edition go on sale this Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m.

Special events for a 20th anniversary Francos!

Pierre Lapointe, Mutantès - from July 31 to August 2, 8 p.m. (August 2, 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) - Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA - For a fittingly stylish celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Francos, the one-of-a-kind Pierre Lapointe takes over Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier for four exclusive performances of Mutantès, a lavish new creation-featuring no fewer than a dozen actor/singers-with stage production from the renowned Claude Poissant. Surrounded by major talents, Lapointe conceived this new show-a poetic, emotion-packed collection of songs-as a journey into his dream-life, where a young mutant takes us on a soul-searching quest for happiness. Fusing several forms of expression, Mutantès is a stage production that shatters expectations, a multi-disciplinary concept-concert far beyond the traditional or ordinary.

Carte blanche à… Michel Fugain - July 27, 8 p.m. - Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA - Presented by Air Transat - After two sellout performances this past winter, and 12 years since his last performance here, Michel Fugain returns to reawaken our collective memories with his magnificent voice and a repertoire that defies the passage of time, the melodies and the music of our get-togethers, our passions, our shared defining moments. Take a roster of such classics as Fais comme l’oiseau, Une belle histoire, Monsieur le monde, Attention mesdames et messieurs, Je n’aurai pas le temps, add new songs from the recent album Bravo et merci, with lyrics by celebrated French songwriters such as Véronique Sanson, who will appear here along with Daniel Lavoie and other friends of Fugain.

Gregory Charles, one piano, one voice, 100 songs - 5 different performances from July 28 to August 1, 8:30 p.m. - Cinquième Salle, PdA (Chansons intimes series, presented by SIRIUS Radio Satellite in collaboration with RockDétente 107,3 Montréal and MusiMax) - Talent, energy, an encyclopaedic knowledge of musical history, and a formidable ability to reach out and touch any audience he meets: re-introducing the Great Communicator, Gregory Charles. The singer-pianist takes up residence in PdA, and a fearsome challenge: a solo history of 50 years of francophone song in five different shows, featuring a different decade each successive night. A genuine tour de force! An exclusive special event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the FrancoFolies de Montréal. (The ’50s - July 28; The ’60s - July 29; The ’70s - July 30; The ’80s - July 31; The ’90s - August 1)

Les Événements Ford Fusion series

Presented in collaboration with La Presse, RockDétente 107,3 Montréal, Info 690 and BOOM FM

Opening concert - Les pop et rock - 20 years of FrancoFolies with les Moquettes Coquettes and their guests - July 25 - A Gala? Kind of. A retrospective? Sure. A party? You better believe it! In a free-form setup that suits them to a T, les Moquettes Coquettes celebrate the 20th anniversary of les FrancoFolies. With mics in hand and saucy smiles on their faces, they’ll revisit the “greatest hits” of Francos history, accompanied by special guests. It’s a little bit hip hop, a little bit rock, a little symphonic, intimate and carnivalesque… all at once! Bring your passion and sense of humour… we’ll supply the special guests! Loco Locass, Navet Conflit, Dan Bigras, Louis‑Jean Cormier (Karkwa), Louise Forestier, Yves Lambert, Vincent Peake, Éric Patenaude (Télémaque), Marc‑André Brazeau (Band de garage, as well as Michel Rivard, who hosted the very first opening gala of the FrancosFolies de Montréal, in 1989!

Véronique Sanson. Opening act: Catherine Major - July 26 - Her magnificent compilation album, Petits moments choisis, was released to acclaim in France last year, and why not: it’s the best of Véronique Sanson. Amoureuse, Besoin de personne, Comme je l’imagine, Chanson sur une drôle de vie, Le maudit, Vancouver, the trademark vibrato, the indelible melodies, the singular interpretive sensibility. Now, Sanson is breathing colourful new life into that discography with a wildly popular French tour that, thankfully, pulls into Montreal and the Francos for the first time since 1991. An audience with a legend… To open the evening, introducing one of the sweetest discoveries of the year: Catherine Major!

Victoria Abril - July 29 - Almodóvar’s muse finally sings in Montreal! Spanish actress and singer Victoria Abril has made 65 films, including five under director Pedro. Musically, she follows up her 2005 album of bossa nova standards with a second album, alluringly titled Olala. It’s a collection of the classic French love songs - by Ferré, Gainsbourg, Barbara, Piaf and Nougaro - recast in a stripped-down flamenco that comes straight from the heart!

Nicola Ciccone - July 30 - Now that’s what we call a success story! Since taking first place in Ma Première Place des Arts in 1998, singer-songwriter and producer Nicola Ciccone has reeled off a string of successes: L’Opéra du mendiant, Noctambule, J’t'aime tout court and Nous serons six milliards. He’s racked up the platinum and gold albums (an increasingly rare achievement in this era of illegal downloading), staged consecutive 100-show tours, and in 2007 took home the Félix for Male Artist of the Year.

Chloé Sainte‑Marie - July 31 - Chloé Sainte‑Marie offers us one final performance on the Parle-moi tour, already awarded a 2006 Félix for Concert of the Year. Guitarists Réjean Bouchard (also musical director), Gilles Tessier and Davy Gallant will be joined by a string quartet. Expect an evening of emotion from Sainte‑Marie, whose peerless versions od songs by Gaston Miron, Patrice Desbiens, Roland Giguère and Joséphine Bacon reveal the very essence of life in all its fragile beauty.

Richard Séguin - August 1 - With Qu’est-ce qu’on leur laisse ?, taken from the album Lettres ouvertes, Richard Séguin once again demonstrates his unique ability to cross the generational divide, a power to unite which we’ve felt before from Et tu marches, Double vie and L’ange vagabond. Fusing words, voice, choruses and conviction, Séguin remains the most generous of artists, bringing faith, courage, and full-hearted humanity to every performance. An inspired Séguin closes his successful Quebec tour with us at the Francos.

Closing concert - Félix, L’homme de paroles - August 2 - Conceptual show directed by Dominic Champagne. Félix Leclerc… Hard to believe it has already been 20 years since he left us: high time for a tribute. The closing concert of this 20th anniversary is dedicated to the man whose words and music helped put Québec on the cultural map of the francophone world. Singers and actors will take turns reminding us of the rare power of such poems and songs as Le train du Nord, Moi mes souliers or L’Alouette en colère. A great homage to a great man.

Métropolis, 9 p.m.

Les Nuits Ford Focus series

Presented in collaboration with Espace musique and 96,9 CKOI

Rassemblement HHD - July 25 - HHD: It’s Hip Hop Dépendant. Rapper Anodajay leads this largest-ever rally of rap chez nous, a blowout success in Montreal and Quebec City in 2007, featuring a wild series of performances and unprecedented collaborations from DJ Horg, Loco Locass, Imposs, Samian, Manu Militari, Accrophone, Sans Pression, L’Assemblée, Boogat, Ale Dee, Taktika, Koriass, CEA, Dramatik (Muzion), Webster, Sagacité and MC La Sauce. You can never tell which artist or song will come up in the rotation. As they say when they rock the mic, “Once we start, there’s no stopping us!”

Éric Lapointe - July 26 - There’s only one: Éric Lapointe has left his indelible stamp on the history of the FrancoFolies. Who can ever forget his landmark performance in 1994, pushing the energy needle into the red zone, or the 2003 tag-team show Le Vent, la Mer, le Roc-THE event of the 15th Francos, in the tradition of J’ai vu le loup, le renard, le lion-with Daniel Boucher and Kevin Parent? The irrepressible Éric returns with the Montreal premiere of his new show coinciding with the release of Ma peau-released today-a more pop-oriented album written in collaboration with Roger Tabra, Michel Rivard, Luc Plamondon and Jean‑Pierre Ferland. Red zone, here we come!

Catherine Ringer chante Les Rita Mitsouko and more - July 27 - Her guitarist partner Fred Chichin passed away last November, but the love affair between Montreal and Catherine Ringer goes on. An enduringly unique and luminous presence, a true survivor, Ringer returns to the stage with the songs of Les Rita Mitsouko, and the Francos await her with open arms! Marcia Baila, Andy, C’est comme ça, Hip Kit, Y’a d’la haine, Femme de Moyen-Âge, Même si: all unforgettable, as this evening will undoubtedly be.

Tiken Jah Fakoly - July 29 - Originally from the Ivory Coast, scion of a griot family, consciousness-raiser and standard-bearer of African reggae and roots, Tiken Jah Fakoly returns with his group. Expect an evening of torrid music-just ask anyone who discovered this artist in his blistering Francos debut three years ago! His latest album L’Africain, recorded in his studio in Bamako-during his voluntary exile in Mali-, is a veritable ode to cultural diversity, bearing the stamp of major names like Magyd Cherif (singer in Zebda), rapper Soprano and kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté.

Omnikrom / Svinkels / James Deano - July 30 - Three hip hoppers, knocking down our door, in a show co-produced by three different FrancoFolies: Spa, La Rochelle and Montreal! Omnikrom-poppy electro-crunk hip hop-continue to build on their notorious success here with their third Francos appearance in three years. These two other hip hop headliners are rhyming here for the first time. Svinkels, France’s answer to the Beasties, unload the punk-rap of their latest, Dirty Centre. James Deano, the prince of Belgian hip hop, could well be one of the genuine revelations of this 20th edition!

Camille. Opening act: Thomas Hellman - July 31 - Critics can only helplessly try to compare Camille to other originals: Björk, Bobby McFerrin or Bauchklang. Since 2002, the young French singer has been weaving her own singularly poetic musical universe, playfully exploring vocal possibilities to her amusement and our delight. A smash hit at the Francos in 2005 and 2006, Camille returns with Music Hole, yet another thrillingly unique and free-spirited album. Opening the show, 2007 Félix‑Leclerc award winner Thomas Hellman blends favourites with new songs due for autumn release. Two singular artists!

Amadou et Mariam. Opening act: Daby Touré - August 1 - They’re back-one of the signature groups marking our first 20 years of Franco frenzy! Ten years after their debut appearance at the Francos, Amadou & Mariam, icons of Malian music, return to charm us with their unique blend of world music, innocence and joie de vivre! This landmark couple spreads joy and is showered with praise everywhere they go. And who knows-they might even favour us with a few new songs from their next album, due in autumn, four years after the marvelous Dimanche à Bamako, produced by Manu Chao.

Tricot Machine, Tricopolis! - August 2 - Welcome to Tricopolis! It’s a world peopled by gigantic knitting machines, spun from the whimsical imaginations of Catherine Leduc and Matthieu Beaumont, the two members of Tricot Machine, and a couple in real life. They’ve woven together a crew-including Damien Robitaille and Avec pas d’casque, along with a string section-to bind songs from their self-titled debut, some unknown pieces and others from their special guests into a gorgeous, seamless work with a beautiful finish. A warm, welcoming and creative workshop.

Club Soda, 7 p.m.

Tendances Vidéotron series

Presented in collaboration with ARTV and Galaxie, RockDétente 107,3 Montréal, Info 690 and 96,9 CKOI

Yannick Noah - July 25 - Yannick Noah: ace on the clay, and now onstage! The former tennis star, a champion at Roland‑Garros in 1983, has been serving up hits as a singer since 2002. Already eight successful albums into a career, he recorded his latest after an inspirational stay in Altiplano, in Chile. Charango refers to the small South American guitar, integrated into Noah’s reggae-based music, including the peppy single Donne-moi une vie. Parisians have to share him with 17,000 fans at Bercy; we get him in the intimacy of Club Soda!

Daran / Noir Silence - July 26 - Together, they rewrote Francos history in the ‘90s! Who can forget the thrill of first hearing Daran’s Dormir dehors, and the rest of his unique songbook? Ever the iconoclast, he returns with Le petit peuple du bitume, an album with the frisson of old Floyd, a 55-minute suite of atmosphere and long solos. Then, welcome the grand return of Noir Silence, with a new album, Immortellement célèbre, inspired by news stories on crazed gunmen. Everybody’s talking about this raw, timely album!

Kevin Parent - July 27 - Kevin Parent and the Francos have enjoyed a long love affair, featuring memorable moments-he was the Mer in Le Vent, la Mer, le Roc-like his brilliant 1995 outdoor show. This year, the Gaspésien treats Club Soda like he owns the place, and invites us all in. First, gather ‘round the kitchen table for an acoustic set; next, regroup to the salon for a dose of electric music. Relaxed and accessible, with harmonies to the fore, Parent re-arranges his classics, stripping things to the core.

Monsieur Mono. Opening act: Le Husky Trio - July 29 - An inspired artist, a non-stop creative force, Éric Goulet has performed for us in every succeeding musical incarnation: Possession Simple, then Les Chiens, and now Monsieur Mono. In this solo project-featuring the albums Pleurer la mer morte and Petite musique de pluie-he offers his most personal songs, casting a lucid, intense gaze upon the lovelorn, battered heart. It’s as though we were listening to a close friend confiding in us, after which we are moved to say, simply, “thank you.”

Cali. Opening act: Antoine Gratton - July 30 - Cali and Quebec have a good thing going! He even spent part of 2007 here taking part in a film due to hit theatres in autumn. And each new album-he’s released three-is another opportunity to mount a mammoth tour and communicate an increasingly politicized sensibility. After C’est quand le bonheur ? and Je ne vivrais pas sans toi comes 1000 cœurs debout, where he worked with producer Scott Colburn, of Arcade Fire fame. Over one million albums sold in France… and a heart that’s still in the right place.

Stephan Eicher. Opening act: Sébastien Lacombe - July 31 - It’s a rare visit to the Francos from Stephan Eicher, who hasn’t played here since 1999! The Swiss singer brings us his 12th album, Eldorado, in which he pursues a fruitful collaboration with his friend, novelist-lyricist Philippe Djian. It’s the newest high watermark in a career of them, including the albums Engelberg and Carcassonne and songs that have gone into the language such as Déjeuner en paix. Opening the evening, the up-and-coming Sébastien Lacombe presents Comme au cinéma.

Benjamin Biolay. Opening act: Cœur de Pirate - August 1 - In the mid-‘90s, Frenchman Benjamin Biolay works as an arranger for L’Affaire Louis Trio, and goes on to become an indispensable writer for Julien Clerc, Henri Salvador, Keren Ann, Juliette Gréco and Isabelle Boulay. Once he steps into the spotlight, he assumes the mantle of spiritual son of Gainsbourg, his seductive murmur leaving no audience member indifferent. With four albums under his name, his latest, Trash Yéyé, features the hit Dans la Merco Benz. His first Montreal visit!

Rose - August 2 - Jilted by a lover, Rose chucked everything at age 27 to follow her dream. Forget the career, I’m gonna sing like my idol, Janis Joplin! She debuts with La Liste, and has a hit on her hands. Next, the album, and France falls at her feet, snapping up 350,000 copies and packing shows on her marathon tour. Finally, we get to hear her jazzy, bluesy folk-rock here in Montreal, where a Francos crowd awaits her tales of romantic adventures. Imagine how much we’d have lost if the guy had stuck around!

Pavillon magique au Parc des festivals (corner De Maisonneuve / De Bleury), 8:30 p.m.

Tout en chanson La Presse

Presented in collaboration with ARTV and CIBL 101,5 FM

Jeanne Cherhal / Katel / Ours - July 24, exclusively at 7 p.m. - The OFQJ-the Office Franco Québécois pour la Jeunesse-celebrates 40 years of outreach with France les nouvelles scènes, a Quebec tour of rising artists from France. The newcomer of the year at the 2005 Victoires, Jeanne Cherhal released the more abstract album L’eau in 2006 and returns for a 3rd Franco visit. The intense Katel delivers Raides à la ville in a powerful voice that brings a sense of urgency to everything she does. Ours (Charles Souchon and Nicolas Voulzy, sons of Alain and Laurent respectively) present the album Mi, including Le cafard des fanfares.

Stefie Shock, microcosme - from July 25 to 28 - Stefie Shock-the man behind Le décor and Les vendredis-embodies spontaneity and novelty. This time out, the wall of sound is stripped down for a concept entitled microcosme, a re-reading of his hits and a few deeper album cuts, with acoustic guitar and vocals to the fore, but maintaining the dance-party imperative. With Marie‑Pierre Fournier on bass, Vincent Réhel on keyboards and Joseph Perreault on drums, it’s an object lesson in small is beautiful.

Thomas Dutronc - from July 30 to August 2 - Musically speaking, Frenchman Thomas Dutronc is a gypsy at heart. He fell hard for Django’s music as a teenager, mastered the acoustic guitar solos seemingly overnight, and began collaborating with the likes of Biréli Lagrène’s prestigious Gipsy Project. And can he ever play guitar! He swings with wit and style and, at 34, released a wryly-titled album: Comme un manouche sans guitare.

Cabaret Juste pour rire, 10 p.m.

Hip Rap Rock Molson Dry series

presented in collaboration with MusiquePlus, NIGHTLIFE Magazine, CISM 89,3 FM and Bande à part

Ami Karim / Ivy - July 25 - He was the special surprise guest at last year’s Grand Corps Malade concert at the Francos. The newest star of French slam, Ami Karim hits hard on his Éclipse totale album, rocketing out of the banlieue with cinematographic writing, a straightforward lyric flow, clean phrasing, and a vision shot through with hope. Ivy follows with the premiere of his new show. A leader on the Montreal slam scene, a wizard of wordplay and lyric invention, he brings it with Slamérica (released by Indica), a stunning album mainlining the rarest of qualities: originality, freshness and intelligence.

Déportivo / Le Nombre - July 26 - Déportivo! The French rock press hails them as one of the most bracing franco-rock revelations in years, a power trio inspired by the lacerating brilliance of Nirvana and Husker Dü, serious aspirants to the crown held by Noir Désir. Expect no less from Le Nombre, who rocked Osheaga last year and took on America, shattering the language barrier with their tight, fearless punk’n'roll barrage! Fasten seatbelts!

Arman Méliès / Navet Confit - Juy 27 - With the albums Les tortures volontaires and Casino, France’s Arman Méliès advances with a lavish singer-songwriter style and a taste for the phantasmagorical melancholy of Bashung… and after all, Méliès provided two pieces for Bashung’s Bleu Pétrole, after they’d written Ivres together. After a boffo Francos appearance in 2006 and brilliant albums LP1 and LP2, Navet Confit confirms himself as one of the most creative artists of his generation. You may have noticed the acclaim and affection that announces his every presence!

Mademoiselle K / Anik Jean - July 29 - Night of the rockeuses! Mademoiselle K has the cred: she opened for Iggy Pop at Printemps de Bourges in 2007. The French artist offers us songs from her albums Ça me vexe and Jamais la paix. And make way for Québécoise Anik Jean, who opened for the Rolling Stones here in 2006! With her own pair of albums under her belt, Le Trashy Saloon and Le ciel saigne le martyre, Jean promises to match Mlle K in every rock’n'roll department. Ladies: start your engines!

Daphné / Sylvie Paquette - July 30 - Daphné took home the Prix Constantin this past February, awarded in France every year to the lesser-known artist whose album is most deserving of a higher profile. And that album, Carmin, is a poetic, dreamlike exploration of the imagination, a sui generis work that belongs in every contemporary CD collection. Sylvie Paquette, winner of the Prix Félix‑Leclerc in 1997, returns to play her 5th Francos. She presents Tam-Tam, a jewel of an album arranged and co-produced by Daniel Bélanger, with whom she previously recorded the magnificent Garde-moi.

Yelle / Numéro# - July 31 - Yelle the Breton: born Julie Budet, the impish, provocatively feminine singer is a phenomenon! Her booty-pop, somewhere between electroshock and electropop, made the whole planet groove with Je veux te voir, racking up 125,000 myspace hits; MTV buzzed, the BBC stroked their chins, and the U.S. fell for her Pop-up. A phenomenon! Montreal electropop duo Numéro# hit with L’idéologie des stars-now accompanied by a dance remix-and their witty, bracing slant on Eurodance-pop. Beats and ideas-together at last!

Pauline Croze / Alexandre Désilets - August 1 - Delicate, singular, sensual and utterly soulful-that’s the voice of Pauline Croze, whose emotionally charged alterna-romantic folk-pop seduces with a second album, Un bruit qui court, and a song already lodged in our permanent mental rotation: Un jour de foule. Alexandre Désilets has already distinguished himself in all of our music contests-Ma première PdA, Petite-Vallée, Granby-and captures us with the intoxicating, Brit-styled folktronic pop of the Escalader l’ivresse album.

MeLL / El Motor - August 2 - C’est quand qu’on rigole, is a third album that reveals the many facets of 25-year-old MeLL-former punkette, winner of the 2007 Prix Félix‑Leclerc, member in good standing of the New French Scene and a smart, sassy live-wire singer of disarming candour, charisma and wit. El Motor roll into their third consecutive Francos with a swinging, golden pendulum of hypno-psychedelic rock, lyrically potent and with a shot of Radiohead, with a certain kinship with Malajube.

The above is a listing of all indoor programming for the 20th FrancoFolies de Montréal; a full slate of 150 free outdoor shows will be announced July 9.
