Calling all guitarists before September 24, 5 p.m.
The Montreal Guitar Grand Prix
is back for its fourth year
Montreal, Tuesday, August 11, 2009 - Guitar players and music lovers rejoice! The 4th Montreal Guitar Grand Prix will take place on September 26 and 27, at Le Savoy in the Métropolis and Club Soda! Ever true to its mission of promoting music making among all publics, the Montreal Musical Instrument Show (SIMM) invites all guitarists, regardless of level or age, to enter the competition. In addition, to give participants even greater flexibility, the MGGP, presented by Godin Guitars in collaboration with Steve’s Music Store and Planète Jazz, is divided into four categories. And this year again, the auditions will be held by category. Register at montrealguitargrandprix.com, before September 24, at 5 p.m. The public is invited to turn out in large numbers to encourage the up-and-coming generation.
Categories in the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix and times for the different audition categories:
- classical - Saturday, September 26, 9:30a.m.
- blues/rock - Saturday, September 26, 1p.m.
- jazz (archtop or gypsy) - Sunday, September 27, 9:30a.m.
- acoustic (fingerstyle, fingerpicking and flatpicking) - Sunday, September 27, 1p.m.
In addition to recognizing the talent of the best guitarists and offering participants on-stage experience, the event will also give them a chance to share in several thousand dollars worth of prizes awarded by Godin Guitars and Steve’s Music Store, by our official suppliers-Marshall amps, DigiTech guitar effects and Samson audio technology-and by the SIMM, the Montreal Guitar Show, and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.
The preliminary auditions will take place over two days: Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, at the Savoy in the Métropolis, in front of an audience. Participants will have to perform a piece of their own choosing (either a composition of their own or an interpretation of someone else’s work) before a judges’ panel. The final auditions will take place at Club Soda-again in front of an audience-on Sunday, September 27, starting at 8: p.m., and will star the top three candidates in each category who stood out in the preliminary auditions.
The SIMM, presented as part of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, is proud to participate in the 13th anniversary of Quebec’s Journées de la culture with the fourth edition of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix, and to offer our talented young musicians a platform for developing and showcasing their art. Like the Blues Camp and the support given by the SIMM to other youth activities, this event reflects the SIMM philosophy of promoting music making among all publics. It seeks both to lend a helping hand to home-grown musicians by offering them stage experience and to promote higher-level music education.
If you would like to participate, nothing could be easier: just register at montrealguitargrandprix.com before September 24 at 5:00 p.m. Places are limited, so it’s first come, first served!
