Battle of the Bands VIII: the Glenn Miller Orchestra vs. the Cab Calloway Orchestra — July 9, 7 p.m., Maison symphonique — The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal upholds tradition with its eighth annual Battle of the Bands this summer! For the first time in over 25 years, the Cab Calloway Orchestra will perform on a Montreal stage! Masterfully led by Cab Calloway Brooks, grandson of the immortal Cab Calloway, the legendary orchestra will face off against the #1 veteran outfit of our Battles: the prestigious Glenn Miller Orchestra of New York! The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be looking to avenge its 2014 defeat at the hands of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra… Here they are in better form than ever, with a ton of hits including the unforgettable In the Mood!
The world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra brings timeless classics like In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Pennsylvania 6-5000, String of Pearls and Tuxedo Junction back to the stage. Even 75 years after founding his famous orchestra Glenn Miller’s music is alive and well. Over 20 musicians and singers bring the unforgettable Glenn Miller sound and perform those songs that everyone remembers… This is a show not to miss for jazz and swing fans alike or the incurable romantics who want to step back in time. The legendary Glenn Miller was the most successful of all the dance bandleaders back in the Swing era of the 1930s and ’40s.
The Calloway family has been dazzling audiences since the 1920’s and this year is no exception. Calloway Brooks, along with the Cab Calloway Orchestra deliver both the authentic sound of a hot Jazz Orchestra and a snazzy stage style-bringing out a jump, blues, and boogie experience of “Swing that is king and Jive that’s alive”. Using the Calloway bands original vintage orchestrations as a starting point, coupled with the awesome musicians who have played with this big band for decades, The Cab Calloway Orchestra creates the authentic unforgettable sensation of a modern jazz orchestra in full flight.
