Address by Jacques-André Dupont, CEO,
and Michel Leblanc, Chairman of the Board
Montréal, Thursday, February 22, 2018 — We are delighted to officially launch this 19th edition of MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE presented in collaboration with Bell, which will run until March 4. Once again this year, the festival offers hundreds of activities in every genre: gourmet activities, thanks to a program as enticing as it is instructive, celebrating knowledge as its centrepiece; an array of artistic rendezvous, from music to theatre, dance and circus arts; free activities on our illuminated, ever-joyous outdoor site, where we have the pleasure of presenting the 2nd edition of Illuminart with the Casino de Montréal; and some 200 activities in our famed Nuit blanche, celebrating its 15th edition this year, also presented in collaboration with the Casino de Montréal.
For 19 years now, MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE has struck a match in a darkened cave, changing our perception of our wintry surroundings by its very presence. Each year, this festival pierces the darkness, illuminating our urban space and sending a wave of warmth coursing through the heart of our wintertime cold. And thanks to our many partners, hundreds of new sources of illumination and warmth have been added over the years, so much so that we can now claim the title as the most beautiful of winter celebrations.
Because if there is one thing that MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE has done since its inception—the source of its worldwide reputation—it is to again and again present new ways to enjoy this metropolis and seize possession of our urban space right in the midst of winter. Once again this year, we are happy to offer an event that is unifying, collective, community-focused, gourmet, luminous, fun, creative and open to the world, just like our city.
Our public partners have always played an essential role in this festival. In fact, 19 years ago, it was our three levels of government, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montréal, and Tourisme Montréal who wanted us to create this event, asking us to find a way to free Montréal from the massive annual darkness of February. The request was no easy one, but the vision was simple: the mandate assigned to Alain Simard and L’Équipe Spectra was to do in winter what they had managed to do in summer with the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and the Francos de Montréal.
As the festival prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, we are proud to note the progress made and results achieved by this vast project. And we are immensely enthusiastic to be embarking upon a major new avenue, so that MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE can continue to fulfill the mission it has accomplished for 19 years. Our goal is to go ever further, to continue to innovate and create a collective wealth for all, at the social and cultural levels as well as in tourism and the economy.
To do so, the support of our partners is essential. I would first like to thank our co-presenter Bell; our three major partners, RBC, the Casino de Montréal, Les Producteurs de lait du Québec; our official sponsors, the Société des alcools du Québec, Énergir, Air France, Québec Maple, Promutuel Assurance, the Hotel Association of Greater Montréal, Coors Light, the ITHQ, Complexe Desjardins, as well as all of our other official partners and suppliers. Thanks also to our three levels of government for their constant support: the Government of Canada—Canada Economic Development and the Ministry of Canadian Heritage, the Government of Québec—Ministère du Tourisme, the Secrétariat à la région métropolitaine and SODEC; as well as the Ville de Montréal, Tourisme Montréal, the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.
Have a great festival!
Jacques-André Dupont, CEO
