Montreal, Wednesday, April 17, 2013 — The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is thrilled to announce the arrival of phenomenal young singer-songwriter Willy Moon in L’Astral, June 9 at 8 p.m., part of the Jazz All-Year Round series presented by TD. With his resolutely modern blend of ’50s rock’n’roll, hip hop and pop, the New Zealand native has become a global smash thanks to the irresistible video for Yeah Yeah, which has racked up over 2.5 million views on YouTube! Tickets go on sale today at noon.
Discovered in 2010 on MySpace thanks to the song I Wanna Be Your Man, Willy Moon soared onto the radar of music journalists―hailed by UK pop critics in Q and The Guardian―as well as those who track down the world’s fashion trends―his “dandy” look landed him in the pages of Elle, GQ and Vogue… And the musician has also found a warm welcome among his peers: witness the approval of a certain Jack White (formerly of the White Stripes), who invited him to open a number of his concerts.
Released this past December, Moon’s debut mini-album offered a foretaste of the full album Here’s Willy Moon, just released, which presents addictive original compositions alongside a pair of inspired covers―Shakin’ All Over and I Put a Spell on You. It’s a golden opportunity to experience this fabulous talent in his first-ever North American tour!
Other must-see concerts in the JAL series
Dorothée Berryman duo — April 20, 8 p.m., — L’Astral — After her visit with a quintet in last summer’s Festival, the charming singer-actress-presenter returns accompanied by her pianist Vincent Réhel to perform material from her most recent self-titled album. The program will feature pieces from the French chanson repertoire, the classics of American popular music, jazz, tango and even a little foray into trip hop. Expect a lovely evening of musical intimacy.
Jill Barber — May 2, 8 p.m. — Métropolis — She has already bewitched us several times in performances during the Jazz All-Year Round series and the Festival—most recently in the summer of 2011 in Club Soda. As spellbinding as ever, Miss Barber returns to present her new album, Chansons, paying tribute to the language of Molière. Marshaling all her inimitable charm, the singer sublimely serenades us with such standards of the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s as Les feuilles mortes, La javanaise and Quand les hommes vivront d’amour. Sheer musical ecstasy.
Térez Montcalm — May 16, 8 p.m. — L’Astral — Take a bit of Janis Joplin, a soupçon of Édith Piaf and a pinch of Ella Fitzgerald, and there’s no doubt you’d end up with Térez Montcalm, the timelessly unique and original singer with the unforgettable voice and heady music. After offering us an inspired tribute to her idol Shirley Horn at the Festival and in the Jazz All-Year Round series in 2011, the peerless musician returns to interpret material from a new album recorded in Brussels and slated for release in March. And we can’t wait…
Tickets for these 3 concerts are already on sale and are available from the venue box offices: L’Astral (305 Ste. Catherine St. W.) and Métropolis (59 Ste. Catherine St. E.); ticketmaster.ca or admission.com, 1 855 790-1245.
