A sheer delight!
The troupe behind the Tarantino event is back!
Montreal, Monday, February 16, 2015 — Last year, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal presented a divinely mad onstage celebration of the films of Quentin Tarantino that culminated in sellout shows and unanimous acclaim. Now, wild performance troupe For the Record returns with an even more dazzling creation for the 36th edition of the Festival! They are the renowned expert conceptualists behind incredible theatrical experiences based on film music, and this time out, they take on the musical world—and inspired madness—of Australian director Baz Luhrmann, renowned for his luminous films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge (the famed Red Curtain Trilogy) and The Great Gatsby, which equally showcase his brilliant imagery and his talent for revisiting hit songs through the lens of his flamboyant vision. Already a massive smash hit in Los Angeles, the production rolls in like a wave of pure pleasure for 8 outstanding performances. Expect completely madcap, lavishly romantic evenings, in a setting of sumptuous filmography that invites the audience to re-experience some of the biggest hits of the past 50 years… with that special Baz touch! For the Record. Baz Luhrmann in concert — June 29, 30, July 2, 8 p.m.; July 3, 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.; July 4, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and July 5, 3 p.m., Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, as part of the 36th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, presented by TD in collaboration with Rio Tinto Alcan. Tickets go on sale at noon today.
Is it music? Sure, but… Film? Not entirely. Dance? Not only that. Theatre? And then some… Well then, what is it?! You’ll have to experience it to understand… An explosive troupe of dancers, musicians and ace performers—featuring most of the members of last year’s Tarantino version, including the delightful Rumer Willis—take over the work and vision of a filmmaker with a fiery passion for music, gathering his most popular scenes and soundtrack excerpts, and transposing them to the stage… their way. They’ll transmogrify songs to showcase them from a different perspective, spike up punchy covers and mash-ups and replay memorable cult-favourite scenes, with actors, singers, dancers and musicians radically transforming super-popular titles—Lady Marmalade, Like a Virgin, Roxanne, When Doves Cry, Your Song, I Was Made for Loving You, All You Need Is Love…—into unforgettable new masterpieces and expanding the spectacle to envelope the grandeur of the room… It’s dynamic, inspired, spirited, often funny, emotion-packed… and guaranteed to be an instant favourite! It all unfolds in the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, transporting the venue back to its golden past—since in its first incarnation, then known as the Gayety Theatre, the marquee gleamed with the greatest names in burlesque (including Lili St-Cyr)… André Ménard, co-founder and artistic director of the Festival, was floored by what he saw and heard in L.A.—which is to say, he was, quote, “absolutely impressed.” And if you can impress André…
